Located in Indre et Loire (37), at about fifteen kilometers, upstream from Tours, on the Loire, Montlouis sur Loire is perched on a South-East tilted headland. The ground is made up of clay surmounted by sand, flint and freestone which was used for the construction of castles of the Loire Valley. Climate conditions are mild with an oceanic influence permitting grapes ripening and the elaboration of a quality wine.
Montlouis sur Loire wine is elaborated from Chenin blanc (also known as Pineau de la Loire).
The Montlouis sur Loire label has strict indications to respect (for not still wine): :
- Yield fixed at 52 hectoliters/hectare.
- Vinestocks arrangement with a density of 6000 vinestocks/hectare.
- Short pruning technique: 4 spurs of 2 buds
The wine area of Montlouis, which counts 450 hectares of vines, stretches over 3 towns: Montlouis sur Loire, Lussault sur Loire and Saint Martin le Beau.
The annual production is constituted at equal parts of still wine and sparkling wine (petillant and traditional method).
